St David’s Day & St Patrick’s Day

In the UK, there are two important holidays in March. First, St David’s Day is on March 1st. Second, St Patrick’s Day is on March 17th. ‘St’ is short for ‘Saint’.

St David is the patron saint of Wales. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and Northern Ireland. A patron saint is a religious person who guides and protects a place.

St David’s Day is a holiday in Wales. Welsh people celebrate St David on March 1st every year. On this day, many people wear traditional Welsh clothing. They also carry daffodil flowers and leeks, which are the national symbols of Wales.

St Patrick’s Day is a holiday in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Only Northern Ireland is a part of the UK – Ireland is an independent country. However, St Patrick’s Day is celebrated in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. Irish people celebrate St Patrick’s Day on March 17th every year. On this day, there are many parades all around both countries. This holiday has become popular all over the world. There is even a St Patrick’s Day parade in Tokyo!

‘Happy St David’s Day’ in Welsh is ‘Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus’. It is pronounced like this: Deethe goo-eel Dew-ee happ-iss. Try saying it in Welsh!

‘Happy St Patrick’s Day’ in Irish is ‘Beannachtaí na Féile Padraig Ort’. It is pronounced like this: Ban-ock-tee nah fay-leh paw-rig urt. Try saying it in Irish!
