My Second Year in the Katsura River!
It is now November, so that means we had Bungotakada’s Taimatsu Matsuri! For the second year in a row, I participated by carrying the omikoshi through the Katsura River. Thankfully, this year was so much warmer than last year! Although last year was very cold, the support and cheers of the community encouraged me to participate again.
This year, I invited two of my ALT friends to participate with me! One is an ALT in Usa City, and the other is an ALT in Bungo-ono. They came to Bungotakada and joined the festival on both Friday and Sunday! It was so fun to participate with them and to see many people I participated with last year. At one point, our “sanbon-jime” was recorded by an NHK camera and I was briefly on the news!
The river was much warmer than last year, but that was not the only difference. There were also SO MANY fish that were jumping out of the water! One actually hit me in the face! The river was also deeper than last year, and at one point I went completely under the water! When they happened, my hachimaki fell off!
After I got out of the water, my shoulders were bruised but I felt a strong sense of accomplishment. I was so happy to have participated in such an amazing and traditional event again! It is another reason why I love Bungotakada.
