The cherry blossoms are beautifully blooming in Bungotakada now. Cherry blossoms are perhaps the most famous symbol of spring in Japan. However, in most of America, there are no cherry blossoms. In Chicago, the first signs of spring are when the snow melts and the birds start chirping. Flowers and trees also of course begin to bloom. When I think of spring in my hometown, I also remember lots of mud! The melted snow creates a very muddy environment! In addition to the melted snow, spring is also the season with the most rain in my hometown. When it is not rainy, spending time outside, enjoying picnics and bonfires, and playing sports like baseball are very fun traditions. Another tradition is called “spring cleaning.” Americans typically do major cleanings of their homes during this season. The holiday “Easter” is also very popular this time of year. It is a Christian holiday for which children decorate eggs by painting them different colors. The children believe that a character called the “Easter Bunny” visits their house and hides the eggs. The children then search for the eggs and try to collect as many as they can! Eating treats like chocolate and marshmallows is also popular. Easter is always on a Sunday, but many schools are also closed on Monday to celebrate the holiday! I have many great childhood memories from Easter Sunday as a kid.
