Japanese Food in Chicago
One of my favorite parts of living in Japan is eating Japanese food. I love sushi, ramen, karaage, and lots more. However, I could also enjoy Japanese food when I lived in America. It is easy to find Japanese restaurants in America. Most Japanese restaurants in Chicago are quite different from those in Japan. One big difference is the price. Ramen is often about 2,500円! Sushi is also very different in America. Japanese-style sushi exists, but there are also many types of sushi that were invented in America. American sushi is usually makizushi with rice on the outside and nori on the inside, the opposite of Japanese makizushi (“裏巻”). American sushi often uses many ingredients in one piece of sushi. Ingredients include spicy sriracha mayo, teriyaki sauce, crab, avocado, cucumber, spicy tuna, and sometimes even things like tempura an cream cheese! Just like ramen, sushi is often very expensive in America. In Chicago, there is a large Japanese shopping center called “Mitsuwa.” In Mitsuwa, you can find many Japanese snacks, restaurants, cooking ingredients,
bentos, and drinks. At Mitsuwa, you can buy almost everything you can buy at a convenience store in Japan! There is even a Japanese bookstore! Both Americans and Japanese people love to shop at Mitsuwa in Chicago. In Chicago, there are also Gyu-Kaku restaurants. It is an international chain! If you visit America, I am interested to hear your opinions of American Japanese food!
