Winter in the American Midwest
Winter in the American Midwest is very cold. It gets so cold that it is sometimes dangerous to go outside! Temperatures of about -8°C are normal, but we sometimes feel temperatures below -30°C! This also means we get a lot of snow. For most of the winter, the ground is covered in white snow. School, however, is rarely canceled. There are big trucks called “snowplows” which clean the snow from the roads early in the morning so we can go to school. Because the temperature outside is so cold, buildings and houses are warmed up by machines called furnaces. These warm up the entire building. That means that all rooms, bathrooms, and hallways are heated at the same time, even if nobody is using them! Thanks to these furnaces, we rarely feel cold inside of buildings. If we need to go outside, we need to dress very warmly with jackets, gloves, scarves, boots, hats, and more. I am happy that Bungotakada does not get so cold, but I sometimes miss the beautiful white snow from my hometown.
