My Experience in the Bungotakada Taimatsu Festival
Last year, I had the chance to watch the amazing November festival in Bungotakada. I was so impressed by the large taimatsu torch, the taiko drums, the dancers, the archery, and especially the people carrying the heavy omikoshi into the cold river. I felt like I wanted to participate. Therefore, I decided to help carry the omikoshi into the Katsura River this year. I participated on both Friday and Sunday and I was able to carry it with Mr. Yoshimura on Sunday! Although it was extremely cold, I had so much fun. I met many new people and I was shown hospitality by many local shops in Bungotakada. I of course had to wear a fundoshi which was a very interesting experience! The cheers from the spectators, the support from the people carrying the omikoshi with me, and yelling of “wasshoi!” helped me to forget about how cold I was. The coldest part for me was when I got out of the river. The wind was very cold and strong on Friday so my body was shivering. After I got dressed and warm, I felt so happy and fulfilled! It was an amazing experience and I would love to do it again in the future if I have the chance! If you came to cheer me on at the festival, thank you so much!
