Thanksgiving in America

Although Christmas and Halloween are popular in Japan, I think few people know about the American holiday called “Thanksgiving” in November. For American families, Thanksgiving is one of the most important days of the year. Whole families gather together for a large dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, pumpkin pie, cranberries, and much more! Even if certain family members live far away, they will travel across the country to be with the rest of their family for this dinner. For this reason, Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days in America!

This holiday has a long history. Some of the first Europeans to move to America struggled a lot in 1621. They did not know how to farm or hunt in America, so the Native Americans helped them. When the Europeans eventually succeeded, they had a large feast with the Native Americans to say “thank you.” Americans today still have large feasts on Thanksgiving to say “thank you” for all of the good things in their life. For example, I am thankful for my family, my health, and the great students at Takada High School! I won’t celebrate Thanksgiving in America this year, but I am excited to do it again in the future!
