Halloween in America
In America, when people think of October, they think of Halloween. There are many Halloween traditions with one of the most popular ones being “trick or treating.” On Halloween evening, children go around their neighborhoods knocking on doors and saying “Trick or treat!” The owners of the house then give the kids candy. During this, the kids are of course wearing costumes of their favorite characters or scary monsters. Oftentimes even the adults in the houses wear costumes while giving candy! In most American neighborhoods on Halloween evening, the sidewalks are filled with kids in costumes carrying bags of candy. At many elementary and junior high schools, kids are even allowed to wear their costumes during the school day.
There are many other traditions as well! Watching scary movies, making Jack o’ Lanterns, going to haunted houses, visiting pumpkin patches, and going apple picking are all things that are enjoyed during the Halloween season. Even
adults can enjoy Halloween by going to costume parties with their friends. I won’t be able to spend Halloween in America this year, but I’m excited to enjoy it in Japan again!
