Japanese Customer Service
People often ask me “what was the most surprising thing when you came to Japan? Usually, my answer is “Japanese customer service!” I have lived in Japan for more than three years, and I am still impressed by it. In Japan, service at places such as restaurants, stores, hotels, and train stations is amazing! The workers are always so kind and helpful.
Before I came to Japan, I lived in America. In America, customer service is not necessarily bad, but the quality of service changes a lot depending on the place! For example, at restaurants in America, servers often have conversations with customers. I think this is very different from Japan. In America, we have a culture of giving tips, so servers often try to give good service! In general, though, workers in America are more likely to “show their personality” than in Japan. Because of that, the quality of service is inconsistent (ばらつきがある). Sometimes, you will have great service with friendly conversations. Other times, the service is not so good.
In Japan, however, I think that the quality of service is almost always good, reliable, and consistent! It feels like everywhere in Japan, no matter what job people are doing, they are doing it with care. Because of that, I have gotten used to it! When I traveled back to America, I actually had “reverse culture shock” and was surprised by the service! I was especially surprised at the airport in America because it felt so different from Japan. The staff was much more direct (and a bit aggressive) than I was used to in Japan!
In general, I love customer service in Japan and I know that other people who travel to Japan feel the same way! Thank you, Japan, for such incredible service!
