【SGHキックオフ講演会 校長挨拶】

5月9日(火)、本校体育館にて行われました、SGHキックオフ講演会での校長挨拶です。

Today we have this great occasion to hear about the USA and world politics from Mrs. Joy Michiko Sakurai, Principal Officer of the US Embassy of Fukuoka. Thank you very much Mrs. Sakurai for visiting our school.

We are excited to listen to her speech. But before that let me tell you a story about my father. He was a soldier of Japanese Imperial navy. In 1944, he was participating in the naval battle as a captain of the bomber. On June 16 1944, his 19th birthday, when he attacked a US military warship, his plane received a hit by the US ship and landed in the sea. Luckily he and the other two men were alive. They swam and swam and arrived on Rota Island. In 1945, when Japan surrendered, they became a military prisoner in Guam.

He would often tell me about that time. I remember the two phrases he said. First “Too many young people died in that war.” He had 620 classmates at Naval Academy, but only 173 of them survived when the war was over. That means over 70 percent died. Second,” US soldiers were very kind and I became good friends with them."

Over 70 years have passed since the war finished. I hope you young people will build a much more peaceful world by yourself. But it's not easy, because there are many problems in the world such as poverty, conflict by religion, terrorism and so on. So you should begin with knowing first. US which had been very kind to my father is the country that is the most closely related to Japan.

Everyone, let 's learn about US and Japan - US relations from her.  Here we go!
